Welcome to...

Sampson's Sanctuary

Hi! The gelding in this photo is Sampson. And he's the namesake - the muse - for the entire conception of our equine sanctuary.

What began as an emotional connection with a gelding's auction advert grew into a journey of discovery: personal growth, making deeper connections with horses, the unlayering of trauma, the resilience of equids, and a partnership between humans who strive to provide the best care possible for horses in need.

Sampson's Story

Sampson was an eleven(ish) year old grade gelding advertised on social media. Something about his advertisement photo stood out to Sydney. Sydney went to the auction, purchased Sampson without going to see him prior, and brought him home. He wore a purple halter that was far too big for his head, had a worn teal lead rope, and was almost unrecognizable compared to the thriving guy he is today. Sampson had clearly suffered: he was ribby, had poor hair coat quality, and was covered in skin fungus and saddle sores. Despite all this, he had a spark in his eye that burned - however dimly! - and Sydney went to work rehabilitating him. It took well over six months to nurse him back to health through diligent vetting, a careful feeding program, and beginning a training/rehab program to help build back his topline. Through her journey with Sampson, Sydney discovered that while she built back muscle on the skeleton of a horse, she was actually also building back his confidence, his curiosity, and his trust in people. Thus, Sampson's Sanctuary was born.

Through lots of determination and a refusal to give up, Sydney discovered that Sampson was bred on purpose. He wasn't an unwanted horse from an unwanted pregnancy - he was no accident. An older woman bred and owned him for the first half of his life, and it was good! Then, as too many horses do, Sampson fell through the cracks after his owner's passing. Sometimes we humans try to do what's best for the horse, but due to not knowing any better, actually end up sending them into a poor situation. This was the case for Sampson. He was sold to a commercial trail riding outfit in Texas where he experienced food scarcity, rough handling, and lots of unpredictability. Imagine going from one gentle, quiet owner your entire life to a bustling and ramshackle operation where he suddenly became one of many, with many different riders! This was extremely stressful for Sampson, and thus his condition - and behavior - began to worsen. This is how Handsome Sampson ended up at an auction in Iowa, where he caught Sydney's attentive eye and lit a fire for rescue and rehab within Sydney.

Here at Sampson's Sanctuary, we believe ALL behavior is communication. We believe that horses deserve to live with the three F's: Friends, Forage, and Freedom. While some of the scars and habits from past years never fully go away (if you watch close, sweet Sampson still eats teeth first due to having to pick sparse stalks of hay out of deep mud), we offer a safe, predictable, gentle environment for horses in need to come, thrive, and blossom. Matching adopters with their heart horses is our passion, and we are proud to offer a permanent home to those who cannot or should not be rehomed. Quality of life and doing what's best for the horse is of utmost importance in the decision-making process regarding rehoming a horse or keeping them as a long term resident of our sanctuary. We make these decisions on a horse-by-horse basis, as each horse is an individual soul with a unique story, past, and set of circumstances.

Our Story

Sydney and Kylee have known each other since childhood. Through Sampson, Sydney and Kylee found that their views on horses, horsemanship, and equine welfare aligned. The Venn Diagram between Sydney's view on horses and Kylee's view on horses would look like a circle.

Kylee trains horses professionally, and through Sydney and Sampson's story, she found

a passion for rescue and rehab in addition to her lifelong love of horse husbandry. Her

love for husbandry translates to a soft heart for equids in their Golden Years. Through

Syd and Sampson's journey, Kylee and Sydney hatched the plan to create Sampson's

Sanctuary, with Sydney taking the lead on the rescue and rehab side of things while

Kylee heads the training and senior care side of the sanctuary. Through their partnership, this women-owned and operated 501(c)3 nonprofit sanctuary came to fruition.
